This session is offered for anyone with an interest in learning more about sailing sea kayaks or who is simply keen to have a go at kayak sailing.
Mark Oates (Paddle Australia Sea Instructor & Senior Whitewater Instructor) will be offering an insight into how OE Teachers at Hutchins incorporate this facet of Sea Kayaking into their program and the pros/cons of using sails with students. The session will start with an introduction on land (equipment set up & group management considerations) and then incorporate these skills into some practical learning out on the water. Both single and double sea kayaks with sails will be available to have a go in. (Remember you can log these hours into your personal kayaking log for Instructor/Guide Qualification currency). 16 places are available (with the only requirement being that participants need to be comfortable with wet exits).
Equipment and clothing required:
Comfortable paddle clothing for the conditions - eg thermal or stretch lycra/fleece top/bottoms/ shorts, cag, dry top/suit, wetsuit or any combination of these you feel comfortable paddling in on the day. Mark will help with suggestions before we leave. Please bring water shoes, sandals, wetsuit boots, Dunlop Volleys, Crocs or similar shoes you can swim in without falling off. Sea Kayaks with sails, paddles, spray decks, cags and buoyancy vests are provided but you are welcome to bring any of your own equipment along as well.
Location: Note too that on Google Maps if you search for ‘The Hutchins School Power of 9’ it appears that the entrance is towards the Royal Yacht Club however the entrance is actually opposite the grass lawn (between the rowing sheds and the RYCT dinghy area).
